Welcome to the Itinerant Magnetism Laboratory

The term “itinerant magnetism” means magnetism which is not due to localized magnetic moments. We find itinerant magnetism in conductors with exchange split bands, as a result of which the electrons at the Fermi surface are spin-polarized. This feature is the basis of a wide range of phenomena addressed by spintronics, an emerging field which opens new routes for the traditional electronic industry as it rapidly approaches its intrinsic limits.

The research in the Itinerant Magnetism Laboratory (IML) addresses a variety of spintronics-related topics including fundamental magnetotransport properties (anomalous Hall effect, planar Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance), spin-torque effects and nanomagnetic dynamics, and physical phenomena relevant to magnetic memory and sensing devices, including tailoring of magnetic and magneto-transport properties by nanostructuring.
